The Warm Up with Star & Micey Vol 2

This has been a big week for our friends in Star & Micey.

On Wednesday, they were named the #1 band in Tennessee to “See Now” by Paste Magazine, so today we invited them to hang out with us and record three unreleased songs for your listening pleasure. They’ll be playing the Overton Square Block Party this afternoon at 6:30 before they hit the road to go back on tour. If you’re on the east coast, they’ll be heading your way soon – so keep a look out. You can even sign up for a reminder on their brand new website.

Take a listen to the show to get details on their upcoming EP and their secret plans to dig up the bones of Hank Williams.

It was a dark night, like many before it in Memphis, Tennessee. Joshua Andrew Cosby walked home from rehearsal with his guitar, case-less, slung over his back. A local homeless man flagged him down, not for money but for a story. He explained to Cosby how he had written a song about his ex-wife Micey. There, on that dimly lit street occurred an exchange, two men playing each other songs of heartbreak and the ultimate sacrifice. Upon parting ways, this man revealed his name to be Star. That name became the fixture for one of Memphis’ most inventive bands: Star & Micey. Its core members are listed as two brothers without the same last name, Geoff Smith and Joshua Cosby. It was merely coincidence that Cosby later met Nick Redmond at a local pub and began a relationship based on music and above all, brotherhood.

Star & Micey’s self titled debut album features a revolving door of fantastic musicians including Luther Dickinson (The Black Crowes, North Mississippi Allstars), Jody Stephens (Big Star) and Rick Steff (Cat Power, Lucero), just to name a few. However, when the sun sets, it is Cosby, Smith, and Redmond that work relentlessly night after night. Hopefully, the music they make can transcend material possessions, and exhibit something that is always tangible between these three troubadours; that thing is love.

Dan Montgomery @folkalliance 2012

We’ve been going to see Dan Montgomery play around Memphis for half of a decade. Over the years we have not only appreciated his fantastic music, but in true folk tradition, Dan is a very entertaining storyteller. He spins tales about the darker side of life, about the people you meet after midnight.

We caught him on the first night of the International Folk Alliance Conference in a room full of admirers singing along to his songs.

Dan Montgomery is an Americana artist based in Memphis, TN. He was born in Philadelphia, grew up in South Jersey and now lives in Memphis, Tennessee. That’s the short version. His latest album is the acclaimed You’ll Never Be A Bird. He is currently working on a new album.

The Warm Up with Austin Lucas

When we heard Austin Lucas was coming to Memphis to play a headlining show at The Buccaneer, we knew we had to get him into Ardent Studios to play some songs for us! Lucas’ connection to Tennessee musicians is long and strong. He’s played with everyone from Lucero, to Cory Branan to Glossary. As a matter of fact, he’s getting ready to record a new album with Glossary as his backing band.

So, take a listen to our interview and preview three great tunes before tonight’s show. Lucas talks about the new album, his Memphis connections and how he feels about being called a “folk punk” artist. Then get off your ass and go see him tonight at The Buc!

Raised in the backwoods country of Monroe County, Indiana, Austin Lucas was born into a folk and bluegrass lineage. His father, Bob Lucas, is an accomplished musician and performer in his own right, having earned songwriting credits on two of Allison Krauss’ albums, including 1997’s Grammy-winning So Long So Wrong. Learning to harmonize before learning to read, Lucas honed his vocal control in six formative years as a member of the nationally acclaimed Indiana University Children’s Choir. In a narrative as well-worn as it is true, Lucas rebelled against his upbringing, leaving his Americana roots for the catharsis of punk rock. After the better part of a decade spent crisscrossing the globe with a series of bands in broken-down vans, Lucas hit a musical glass-ceiling, eventually finding respite for his ringing ears in the delicacy of traditional songcraft.

The Warm Up with The Rocketboys

We were thrilled to have Brandon Kinder back in the studio this weekend, this time with his band The Rocketboys. The native Memphian now calls Austin home (the city we seem to keep losing all of our best talent to!) but the bluff city is still a staple on the band’s tour roster.

The Rocketboys always put on a great show and sound amazing live. Tonight they’ll be headlining at The Young Avenue Deli with opening acts The Winter Sounds and Memphis’ very own Jeremy Stanfill.

Check out our podcast to hear several brand new songs that will probably end up on their new album due out in the spring. Then we’ll see you at the show TONIGHT!

The Rocketboys is an indie rock band from Austin, Texas. The band was previously known as Homer Hiccolm & the Rocketboys. Since their formation, they have gained popularity from playing such festivals as Austin City Limits Music Festival, Next Big Nashville, CMJ, and South by Southwest.

The Warm Up with The Memphis Dawls

We were super excited to have our really good friends The Memphis Dawls stop by Ardent Studios today to record an episode of The Warm Up. We’ve been following these ladies’ musical careers for the last half decade and are thrilled about this new incarnation.

You may know Holly Cole from her other project, Holly and the Heathens, Krista Wroten as the violin player in Amy Lavere‘s backing band, and Jana Misener from Giant Bear. And if you live in Memphis and don’t recognize Nahshon Benford’s horn playing, we don’t know where you’ve been the last decade since he plays on just about every Memphis album of note that has been released the last few years!

But even if you’ve never heard of any of their other projects, we urge you to take a listen to The Memphis Dawls. They’re fabulous musicians and so good looking! If you are in Memphis, you can catch them play TONIGHT at Otherlands!

5 Questions with Richard James & The Special Riders

Check out our chat with Richard James & The Special Riders featuring intriguing questions from Brass Bed, The Gunslingers, and The Memphis Dawls.

Richard James and Anne Schorr began playing together in 1995 in New York in their band, Broken Chains. They moved to Nashville in 1997, where they released their first single, “Girl Song/Organic Tangerine”, on Misprint Records. Richard later released a 7-inch single, “Jeff Gunn,” on Wrecked ‘Em Wreckords, recorded for the first time as Richard James and The Special Riders, followed by the full-length CD, “Raw Roc Rol,” while Anne worked on her solo project, The Firecats.

Anne joined forces with the Special Riders in 2007 for the next CD, “Music For People Who Been Wrong(ed),” which was produced by Nashville’s Roger Alan Nichols (Paramore) and features guest contributions on guitar by Reeves Gabriels (Tin Machine, David Bowie) and on harmonica by Mark Holder (Black Diamond Heavies).

Their 2009 release, “Haints In My Past,” was recorded in Memphis at High/Low Recording, the Makeshift studio used in MTV’s $5 Cover. For this project, Richard enlists Memphis musicians Tim Regan on keyboards (Snowglobe, Antenna Shoes, Oh No Oh My) and brothers Toby and Jake Vest (Bulletproof Vest), as well as drummer Marcus Battle (Chasing Squirrels, Ten Acre Gunroom).

Richard’s next record, “The Hi, The Lo, The Nightlife,” will be out early 2011.

Locals Only: Jeff Hulett Listens to Tiger High

Lately, I’ve been listening to Tiger High, a fairly new rock quartet that includes the Vest brothers, Jake and Toby, Greg Faison and Greg Roberson. They are all pretty well known around Memphis for being in other bands like, Jump Back Jake, The Bulletproof Vests,  and The Reigning Sound. Jake is on guitar and vocals, Toby is on keys, Faison plays bass and Roberson is on drums. I haven’t seen them live yet, but I’ve been playing out their tape in my car.

Yes, I said tape.

It’s perfect to roll down your windows and cruise around Memphis to. That being said, it’s also good for cooking out. It’s the perfect balance of straight up rock, quirky pop with a touch of shoegaze flavor for good measure. For example, take “Losing Out”:  it starts out slow, caked in reverb and then opens up into a brilliant foot stomping jam that makes it near impossible to move on to the next song. Or take “Up and Down Again,” this tune takes the train beat to a whole new level. This song builds and drives and when you finally reach the pay off… well, let’s just say you will have goose bumps. Honestly, it took me five listens to move on to Side B because Side A is chopped full of so many perfectly crafted hooks, melodies and lyrics that invite you to sing along. These boys are the real deal and I strongly urge you to pick up a copy of Myth is This. You won’t be sorry.
