Spotify Playlist: Folk Alliance International 2012 by Rachelandthecity

For our feature Nice Playlist, Brah, we ask some of our favorite musicians to make a themed Spotify playlist for us. You know, Songs to Make-out To, The Worst Bands I Have Ever Heard, Songs Your Mom Would Like,  we just ask them to be creative, and then we post them to The Ardent Music Blog and share them with you. When you’re looking for a good Spotify playlist, now you know where to look. This week we invited music aficionado Rachelandthecity to put one together for us for Folk Alliance International. We invite you to take listen to the playlist while you read why the musician included each song. Enjoy!

I look forward to the International Folk Alliance Conference every year. I always meet a lot of great people and discover tons of good music. It is easily my favorite music convention. Held in downtown Memphis for the last 6 years at The Marriott, it’s a small event hosting just 2000 people. The day is filled with panels and classes, with a few private showcases, but the main music event starts at 6PM Wednesday through Saturday and features about 30 official showcases each night. Then at around 10:30 the music moves upstairs to the top three floors of the hotel with about 6 hours of showcases every night featuring hundreds of musicians. The beds have been removed from the rooms and so about 30 rooms on each floor, around 90 in all, are turned into small showcase rooms with bands playing 20 minute sets. You’ll never see so much fantastic music in such a short amount of time anywhere else in the world. Not to mention, one of the most fun parts of the conference is the sense of community. Don’t be surprised to catch Steve Poltz sitting next to you while you’re catching a set from Matt the Electrician, or find yourself sharing a cigarette on the stairwell with members of The Tuttles and The Milk Carton Kids, and did you hear Anthony Da Costa was turning 21? Well, you’re invited to the party to watch as he is serenaded by Carrie Elkin, Danny Schmidt, Raina Rose, Rebecca Loebe, and many more.

This is a playlist of some of my favorite artists that played FAI this year. It is in no way complete (there seem to be a lot of artists either without music on Spotify or without their latest work) but this should give you a glimpse of some of the fantastic musicians that passed through Memphis last week. Now, that FAI is leaving Memphis and headed to Kansas City, we hope these folks will find another reason to visit us soon!

1. The Milk Carton Kids

I liked these guys so much when I first heard them last month that I invited them to Ardent to record an episode of The Warm Up. You can hear it here.

2. Humming House

This Nashville based group is friends with Carolina Story (who I really love too) so I caught them in a packed room where everyone seemed to be singing along.

3. Matt the Electrician

This guy is so mind blowing that I saw him play three times at the Folk Alliance – and I invited him to play The Warm Up. He played a brand new song that he named right before we recorded it. Listen to that performance here.

Nice Playlist, Brah: 2012 Campaign Playlist by President Barack Obama

Can you believe Barack Obama is on Spotify? We can! His Social Media team is totally on top of things! We mean, come on, the guy is on tumblr! (So are we, by the way!) We usually only allow musicians to  share playlists- but we decided to make an exception this time! Even though we know that this very eclectic mix was probably not curated by POTUS himself, wouldn’t it be super cool if it was?

Sure, this playlist is a little “white” and heavy on middle of the road pop (two songs from Sugarland AND Darius Rucker??) – but we’re still impressed. You know what else is kind of cool? Several of these bands have recorded in the building where we sit! Click to stream!

1. “Keep Marchin’” – Raphael Saadiq

2. “Tonight’s the Kind of Night” – Noah and the Whale

3. “Keep Me in Mind” – Zac Brown Band

4. “The Weight” – Aretha Franklin

5. “Even Better than the Real Thing” – U2

6. “The Best Thing About Me is You” – Ricky Martin

7. “Home” – Dierks Bentley

8. You Are The Best Thing – Ray LaMontagne

9. “Got to Get You into My Life” – Earth, Wind and Fire

10. “Green Onions” – Booker T. and the MGs

Nice Playlist, Brah: Tripp Kramer’s 2011 Mishmash

Instead of a best-of list, I tried to compile a cross-section of my personal 2011 listening. Some songs are old, some are new. Some are really old. A quick note: this list sounds much better with some low end, so laptop speakers might not do it for you. The songs are in no particular order; I tried for the best possible flow. Bon appetit. Click to Stream:

“An Echo From The Hosts That Profess Infinitum” by Shabazz Palaces

Black Up was probably my favorite album of 2011, so I figured this would be a good place to start. Everything about this song is incredible, especially the vocal sample that sounds like the girl from Poltergeist when she’s stuck in the TV. I remember the first time I heard that kalimba breakdown — I went nuts. But it was okay, because I was alone in the car.

“Bleak Bake” by King Krule

Last year, my friend sent me a few Zoo Kid tracks and I was stunned to discover he was only sixteen. So I waited less-than-patiently for his first release under the King Krule moniker, and I wasn’t disappointed in the least. Kid’s the man, and the EP is packed with great ideas and gritty vocal stylings.

“Your Love” by Sepalcure

As an American, I often get bummed thinking about how cool England’s electronic scene must be. But last January, these Brooklynites released a killer EP on Hotflush Recordings and I realized not all hope is lost. Take that, limeys. (Just kidding. Please keep making bass music.)

Nice Playlist, Brah: Top 9 Somethings of 2011 by Jake Vest (Tiger High, Echo Friendly, Bullet Proof Vests)

Disclaimer: I’m not a Spotify subscriber or an English major. When I want streaming music I use a modest streaming service by the name of MOG (who cares?). Many moons ago you might have caught me singing Spotify’s praises, but my mind has been transformed for several reasons. I will list these in list form:

1. The absence of Ty Segall’s “Goodbye Bread” album (s0000 annoying!)
2. No Bake Sale
3. No Bob Dylan
4. It’s ugly.
5. Jake Rabinbach never sent me songs like he said he would (and he’s the one that got me to try it in the first place).
6. All the bros clogging up my precious Facebook feed with their “Check out what I listened to on Spotify” garbage.

But on a lighter note, here are my favorites in playlist form. Click to Stream.

1. “Gone” by Mikal Cronin
I tried to pirate this record since the day it was announced (I love the Moonhearts). It finally came out around Gonerfest, and I decided to take the righteous path and purchase it. Probably my favorite album of the year. Definitely one of the best live shows I saw. My gracious boss was kind enough to let me take a break from my job during Gonerfest to catch the Cronin and his band kill it on stage. Their Flaming Groovies cover was a fantastic set closer. His new 7″ on Goner is great, too.

2. “The Dream” by Thee Oh Sees
I love Thee Oh Sees. I spend a lot of my internet allowance on blogs that specialize in live bootlegs from San Francisco garage bands. My hard drive has devoted many gig-o-bytes to Thee Oh Sees. They are an unstoppable beast and should be recognized as one of the hardest working and highest quality bands in the world today. And now they have two drummers. And this year they put out two albums. Both are superbly unique and satisfying. “The Dream” is the first track on side 2 of their newest record. The riff and the melody are so simple, but when filtered through the band its a huge blast of insane energy. Love it.

3. “Bump Up” by Sun Araw

I’m a big fan of this guy. His “songs” have a sound that I can’t get enough of. It’s not particularly engaging (except for last years “Last Chants”) or interesting. But I can listen to it all day long.

4. “Sweet 17″ by Dirty Beaches
This band sucks, but this song is cool.

Nice Playlist, Brah: Brandon Thornburg of Electrocity’s Best Dance Tracks of 2011

I feel like a bit of an outsider submitting a list of what I consider to be the best underground electronic/dance tracks (that are available on Spotify) to the Ardent Music Blog, but the music represented here is what I love the most, and it provides the outlets that occupy almost all of my free time (apologies to my wife). I sincerely hope I am able to represent myself and what I do well and that you are able to find something you love on this list. Click to Listen:

1. Worthy & Eats Everything – Tric Trac
What’s not to love about traditional electro? This near perfect collaboration between San Francisco’s Worthy and Bristol UK’s Eats Everything sums up the striking new ‘grass-roots’ direction being taken by deep house producers. I am in love.

2. A1 Bassline – Falsehood
This is the new Booty House. I bet it never gets old.

3. Hudson Mohawke – Thunder Bay
Hudson Mohawke shows us what happens when a production genius from the UK decides to thumb his nose at dubstep and try his hand at Trap music… Brilliant.

Nice Playlist, Brah: Mike Jackson’s Favorite 2011 Jamz

Well, here’s my two cents. And since a few of my favorite hip hop tracks this year aren’t on Spotify, welcome to my very white 2011 playlist. Still, this isn’t extremely comprehensive or ranked in any order…just some of my favorite tracks of the year that I keep going back to. Here it goes!

1. “Sunday Best” from I Believe You Liar by Washington
Somehow, I hadn’t yet heard of this chick from down under, but her debut full length is chock full of great pop songs and superb production. Great singer as well. This song was the first track from the album that hooked me in. Then I was done for.

2. “No Light, No Light” from Ceremonials by Florence + The Machine
Superb artistry. Grandiose, theatrical production. Great songs. Just what you’d expect from Florence Welch on her sophomore record. This song’s got serious attitude. Wonderful.

3. “Cannons” from The Year Of Hibernation by Youth Lagoon
When this kid put out this single back in the summer, all of a sudden folks knew Youth Lagoon brought something to the table. Great hooks with creative instrumentation.
