The Warm Up with This Providence

We’re a little bit under the weather today, but lucky for us we were treated to the best kind of medicine: great music.

Seattle-based band This Providence stopped by Ardent Studios this afternoon before their gig at Newby’s tonight to play us three songs from their upcoming record, Brier. It’s scheduled for release at the beginning of May so we were lucky to get an early taste of the band’s brand new tunes. Not only have there been changes to the line-up over the past few years, there has been a change to their sound.  According to the band, their new music represents a more stripped-down, organic approach to songwriting.

We have to admit that we’re not exactly sure what they sounded like before, but the new music has us hooked. Check out the podcast to hear for yourself. We also discussed their recording process for the new record and where they’ve been getting their inspiration from lately.

If you’re in the area you can catch them tonight when they open for OK Radio – or if not, they’re heading for the west coast after this so you should have ample opportunity to see them play!

This Providence is a four-piece alternative rock band from Seattle, Washington. The band consists of Dan Young (lead vocals/guitar), David Blaise (bass), Gavin Phillips (lead guitar), and Andy Horst (drums). They are currently supporting Go Radio on the Lucky Street tour and will release their new EP, Brier, on May 1st.

The Warm Up with Water Liars

We’ve had an awesome week in Memphis, hosting tons of great bands and  staying out way too late hanging out with said bands. Fareveller Music Festival is wrapping up tonight with three huge shows at Otherlands, Young Avenue Deli, and Newby’s. It’s a very eclectic line-up with too many top notch bands to name – but one group that we’ve been waiting anxiously to see is Water Liars.

The band graciously agreed to make make the long drive from Ohio to get here early enough to record three stripped down versions of songs from their new album Phantom Limb out on Misra Records. We got them to play them on the grand piano and they turned out sounding fantastic.

So, take a listen to the music, then stay tuned for our little chat about their plans for the summer and how the new record came about by accident. Then we’ll see you TONIGHT when they open for Jessica Lea Mayfield. If you have any energy left, wander down the street to Young Avenue Deli and catch the Fareveller Music Festival closing festivities with Those Darlins.

Perhaps one of the greatest albums in Misra’s canon, Water Liars’ debut was entirely unplanned. Recorded on a whim, with one microphone, the then unnamed rock band – consisting of St. Louis, MO songwriter, vocalist, guitarist Justin Kinkel-Schuster and Oxford, MS drummer, producer, multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bryant – casually convened to play and record.

Over the course of three days, in the small milltown of Pittsboro, MS, a series of ineffable and magical recordings came together. It was one of those seemingly providential experiences – far too remarkable to be denied. Water Liars was born.

Locals Only: Brandon Moses Crouch Listens to Cedric Burnside Project

It was a cold night in Memphis just a few weeks back. I had no real expectations for the evening, only to meet a few friends for a drink or two, but as I was walking down the Highland Strip towards the bar, I heard something radiating out of Newby’s that I hadn’t heard in Memphis in quite some time.

It was something familiar, something I’d known since childhood. It was a sound that defined my adolescence, and the sound that continues to be a driving force as I grow musically and otherwise. Suddenly, my plans had changed and I found myself in the midst of an incredible event. This was more than a concert. It was therapy, it was a healing, but above all it was a homecoming. Strangers became family if only for a night, all of us together digging the sounds of a new kind of Hill Country Blues impeccably executed by Cedric Burnside Project.
