Folk Documentary Still Needs Help Raising Funds

The holidays are here and the people behind the FOLK documentary have added several new incentives to their Kickstarter campaign, with gift-giving in mind. And because they truly believe in this film, they will honor any gift pledge you make, regardless of whether they reach our funding goal!

• Digitized versions of the film (when it’s done)
• An original piece of art by David Bowie from a personal collection, signed and numbered by him of the Heroes album cover from an edition David gave out for Christmas in the ’70s.
• A hat knitted by Raina Rose
• An amazing photo by fine art photographer Julie Blackmon
• A limited edition of photos from the Lloyd the Cat series
• Some great photos by cinematographer Henry Jacobson, taken on the road with Elliott, Rose and DaCosta last August.

MORE THAN HALFWAY TO REACHING THEIR GOAL – SPREAD THE WORD!

• Forward their Kickstarter campaign or post it to your Facebook/Twitter page.
• Like us on Facebook
• Mention & link FOLK on your band, company or personal web site! Any site mentions will receive a reciprocal mention on their web site – www.folkdocumentary.com

In the latter months of 1969, somewhere between the moon landing and the start of the Vietnam draft, the concerts at Woodstock and Altamont, Alex Chilton decided to take back his life. During that annus mirabilis, while the world experienced a generationally sparked social, political, and cultural upheaval, the 18-year-old Chilton was in the midst of a revolution of his own.

For the past year, Chilton had been strapped in a creative, professional, and personal straitjacket. He was the lead singer of a million-selling band, The Box Tops, but felt like little more than a puppet of the group’s producers. In the era of free love, he’d been pressured into a shotgun marriage and fatherhood. And he’d ultimately come to see himself as the pawn of an unscrupulous business machine, sent to grind it out on the road in a series of silly lip-synched TV performances and one-night stands while someone else cashed his checks. As he entered the studio that summer to make his first solo recordings, the man who would come to define the very spirit of musical independence was still bound in chains. At a time where liberation and self-expression were rallying cries, Alex Chilton was about to break free.

Omnivore Opens Webstore with Exclusive Big Star Third [Test Pressing Edition] on CLEAR Vinyl!

Note: Unfortunately Omnivore cannot ship internationally. They can only ship to the US and Canada. They are working to change this as soon as possible. Please stay tuned.

The Omnivore webstore is now open for the US and Canada and you may now purchase Omnivore Recordings releases directly from them!

You’re the first to know that as their first webstore exclusive, they are releasing 500 copies of Big Star‘s Third [Test Pressing Edition] pressed on clear 180-gram vinyl. Same awesome cut and pressing as the black vinyl Record Store Day version, same cool inserts, same cool packaging — a second bite of the apple for those who got shut out on Record Store Day! Limit one per customer, so everyone has a shot. They’re doing this as a huge thank you for being in on the ground floor with them. So, go get them now! When they’re gone, they’re gone for real. No, they didn’t do any other (or different) crazy color pressings.

Here’s the story: You’re probably aware that back in April, Omnivore’s very first two releases were exclusives for Record Store Day. All copies of Big Star’s legendary album, Third [Test Pressing Edition] and all the copies of our yellow vinyl Buck Owens 7″ “Close Up The Honky Tonks”/”My Heart Skips A Beat” (both early versions) blew off the shelves quicker than quick. It was the biggest Record Store Day yet, and they were really happy to make their debut then and contribute to a great day. (In fact, their Big Star package wound up pictured in Rolling Stone alongside the story about how successful RSD was this year — cool!).
